We’re excited to announce the launch of a new initiative in Morocco aimed at transforming the textile and apparel sector. In collaboration with the German Development Agency (GIZ) and Decathlon, we are embarking on a pilot project to establish circular supply chains, addressing the country’s annual generation of approximately 83,200 tons of textile waste. At the heart of this project is the development of a local recycling infrastructure for post-industrial polyester textile waste, paving the way for the production of high-quality recycled feedstock and material inputs.
This month, the project officially commenced with an on-site visit of the Closed Loop Fashion team that included key partners GIZ, SIMTIS, POLYFIL, Decathlon and ESITH. This initial phase focused on assessing textile waste at each manufacturing partner’s facilities, the identification of capacity building and training needs and concluded with an operational workshop, where all stakeholders gathered to finalize the next steps.
The primary focus of this week was to jointly assess the status quo, identify current challenges, and determine key focus processes and products essential for developing a strategic roadmap. This collaborative approach will guide the establishment of polyester recycling supply chains and product outcomes, ensuring alignment with international quality standards and competitive pricing.
This initiative promises to reshape Morocco’s textile industry. We will continue to share updates as this important work unfolds.
This project is conducted by Closed Loop Fashion on behalf of the German Development Agency, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in the framework of the Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition” (Invest for Jobs).
